PhD student entrepreneur Tom Robbins wins £5k award in ConceptionX competition

Conception X is a nine-month entrepreneurship programme for PhD students designed to help them launch deeptech startup based on their research in science or engineering. Four teams each received a £5k award to recognise their progress and contribute to their next steps as founders.

In 2019 Conception X hosted 18 PhD teams from a variety of departments at UCL, including EEE, computer science, mechanical engineering and medicine. When the teams completed the training programme and moved into commercial prototype development and testing they were asked to submit a five-minute video about their progress. Four winners received a £5k award to recognise their progress and contribute to their next steps as founders.

One winner was IPES CDT PhD student Tom Robbins whose team ‘Pinfold Technologies’ came up with a novel way to create ultrasound images. The result of his work is a platform which drastically reduces the cost of ultrasound equipment and enables ultrafast 4D imaging for the first time. Beyond medicine, it has potential applications in medical research, industrial testing, consumer durables, and consumer electronics markets.
