CDT MRes student at PhoxTrot 2016 Summer School

Thomas Gerard attends summer school at St Andrews on photonics for high-performance, low cost and low energy data centres.

UCL CDT MRes student Thomas Gerard attended the PhoxTrot 2016 Summer School, with funding from the IPES CDT. This was very helpful preparation for his PhD project with Dr Benn Thomsen and Microsoft Research Cambridge:

"I found the PhoxTrot 2016 Summer School an excellent introduction to my PhD in optical switch systems, helping me get to grips with how my research will fit into the greater field of optical communications. There was a healthy mix of lectures from experts, presentations by academics on their research and pitches by industry professionals on cutting edge technologies. For me, particular highlights were the overview of the challenges facing data centers given by Richard Pitwon from Seagate, a presentation from Hiuyun Liu from UCL on III-V lasers on silicon, and even a proposed optical switch system design from George Kannellos from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a rival solution to my PhD topic! It was particularly useful to meet with the presenters after each session for further discussion. It was great to see how welcoming the PhoxTrot project members were, and the University of St Andrews was a refreshing change of pace from London life."
